Available in Vineland

Sleep disorders can affect one in four adults. At CDI, we realize that sleep is a key component of good health and we are dedicated to properly diagnosing and effectively treating sleep disorders.

CDI's sleep lab is designed with a home-like atmosphere. Each room is equipped with a queen size posturpedic bed, flat screen TV and state-of-the-art sound dampening.

The Sleep Study
A sleep study entails spending the night in the sleep lab at CDI in Vineland, where sensors record brain waves, heart activity, oxygen levels, breathing effort, airflow and movements of the eyes, chin, arms and legs. A small microphone picks up snoring or any other sounds. A video camera records the session to document any unusual behavior.

During the night, a technician monitors the equipment to ensure that it functions properly. After the study, all of the data is analyzed by a member of the CDI staff who is specialty-trained in sleep medicine.

The studies are designed to diagnose sleep problems including:

  • Sleep apnea, when an adult regularly stops breathing during sleep for 10 seconds or longer. This may be caused by blocked airflow during sleep, such as from narrowed airways. Or it may be caused by a problem with how the brain signals the breathing muscles to work.
  • Problems staying awake, such as narcolepsy.
  • Problems with nighttime behaviors, such as sleepwalking, night terrors or bed-wetting.
  • Problems sleeping at night (insomnia). This may be caused by stress, depression, hunger, physical discomfort or other problems.
  • Conditions such as periodic limb movement disorder, which is continuous or wild movements of the feet, arms or legs during sleep.

Sleep studies can also determine whether there is a problem with a patient's stages of sleep. The two stages of sleep are non-rapid eye movement (NREM) and rapid eye movement (REM). Normally, NREM and REM alternate 4 to 5 times during a night's sleep. A change in this cycle may make it hard to sleep soundly.

The Sleep Disorder Center at CDI is open seven days a week and can accommodate special requests for daytime studies. The lab can also examine children ages eight and older.
